I get it.

New year, new stress.

Welcome back to college. Or welcome to college… it may only be your first month back but there’s a good chance you’re already a little bit overwhelmed and annoyed. Your metabolism is slowing down and life is speeding up…I get it. Sometimes college is overwhelming.

I’ve been there. So maybe my 10 pieces of advice for you will somehow make this year a little more bright for you.

1.DO YOUR SQUATS.

Go on that run. Eat fresh fruit. However, promise me you won’t do this for anyone but yourself. Get healthy and strong this year– that is a GOOD thing. Instead of being moody, get that bootay girlfriend.

2. Stop texting him the homework assignments!!!

I get it, he’s cute. But guess what… I do not care how cute he is. Chances are he isn’t the one if he texts you every MWF “did we have homework” an hour before class. He needs to get his crap together and you need to focus on your own grades…not his.

3. You were beautiful before he told you.

In college, you’ll find plenty of boys who will tell you “you’re beautiful”. And guess what? They are right.  You are beautiful. But know your worth before he acknowledges it. Because if he is your foundation for your worth, when he breaks your heart, leaves you on read, or asks another girl to formal –you’ll be upset. Even if he is a great guy no man should ever be your foundation. He ain’t Jesus.

4. You are beautiful because of whose you are, not who you are.

You have a unique identity to you…your quirks, your hobbies… but the most important thing about you is you have a Creator and Savior. You are beautiful not because of anything you can do, but because of what Jesus has already done. Being a loved child of God makes you beautiful. Celebrate that.

5. IT IS NOT A SIN TO CRY.

I repeat… IT IS NOT A SIN TO CRY. Cry about the test. Cry about how tired you are. Cry because you feel lonely. But after you cry…promise me this… you will MOVE ON. Pick your head up and know your truth. God isn’t finished with you yet. It is a bad day, not a bad life. God’s doing something great in you…you can’t see the whole picture yet but one day you will.

6. Call your grandparents.

This one speaks for itself. You can google for answers but you can’t google wisdom. Call your grandparents if you ever need a little wisdom. Or call them just because it is Tuesday and you have 10 minutes to spare.

7. When you make a mistake, repent to Jesus, then forgive yourself.

Jesus died for you. The cross is bigger than your Friday night, your past relationship, and the moment you can’t forget… You are loved and forgiven. Stop beating yourself up. Pray for wisdom. Pray to say no next time. But, if you allow yourself to think a moment defines you, you are saying the cross isn’t big enough. The cross is bigger than your mistake.

8. Drink water.

Seriously, coffee doesn’t count. Neither does alcohol. Neither does soda, energy drinks, or your tears. Drink water. Your future wrinkly self will be thankful. It is good for your skin girl.

9. Jesus drank wine (legally) yes… but He didn’t take ten shots and do a keg stand…

Do I really have to explain myself here? Be smart.

10. Don’t allow your plans to distract your from your purpose.

Spoiler alert: God is good at being God. You’re gonna have bad days in college. Maybe, today was that bad day. But there are good days up ahead. You’re going to cry, get your heart broken, and maybe fail a test. But you will also have jam sessions with forever friends and meet professors who will shape you forever. This journey may be confusing at times, but God is at work through it all.

Here’s the truth: Yes, work towards a degree and work towards earthly friendships, but do so in His name. Chase the author of love and One who created you first. How are you supposed to figure out your purpose in this world if you don’t first follow the One who created your purpose? Try your best. Study for the test. Do some squats. But focus fully on His name. And in your weariness, brokenness, and on days when you are overwhelmed, breathe in-and-out. Then, look at where your feet are planted. God put you where you are for a reason. He’s gotten you this far. Why don’t you trust Him with your tomorrow?

I love Jesus, diet coke and sunflowers. I wish I lived in the mountains, but love the two states I call home--Louisiana and Texas. I can watch Criminal Minds all day and dream of one day owning an ice cream truck for fun. However, my main goal in life is that more girls will realize the worth they have through Christ Jesus--and with Him and Him only we are enough.
