In life, there are many pains you will experience because in case you haven’t figured it out yet— life stinks, people can be mean, and not every morning will be easy. We forget so often that we need rain to make rainbows, and night to begin a new day.
I remember the pain of feeling bullied and lonely in junior high, crying because some boys called me ugly. I remember my first broken heart, wondering what I did to end up crying in a bathroom over a boy who did not even care about me. I remember counting every calorie I ate, skipping meals and working out for four hours each day to be a size 0 for spring break, but fainting in the gym bathroom from overworking myself. I remember failing a test in college I had spent two weeks at the library in preparation for.
Life stinks. But to the women who are like me and have ever shed tears over not being pretty enough for the boy, popular enough to sit at the cool lunch table, or smart enough to ace that test— all that stuff does not matter.
Here’s the deal darling, when you are saying “I do” to your husband, the boy who made you cry in the bathroom at 17 will not matter. When you are graduating college, the one test you failed will be irrelevant. The fact you did not have perfect abs on your college spring break will not matter when you are watching the Price is Right at 50 with the love of your life. Your problems today will not matter tomorrow morning. The pain you are experiencing right now is temporary, but the love your Creator has for you is eternal.
This life is not easy, and as a woman you will experience broken hearts, stress, period cramps and make many mistakes. You will fail and you will mess up, but what matters is not your past, but where you are heading. Are you heading towards eternity with the Lord, or are you following the temporary satisfaction this world offers for a small portion of time?
What matters is the cross. What the scale says has no importance, but what the cross says to you gives you freedom for eternity. The boy who broke you heart is nothing compared to having the King of Kings die for you so you could be able to enter paradise with Him. The dress you cannot fit into means nothing compared to the everlasting love the Savior has for you.
What matters is how you live with the life God has given you. Are you going to sit back and focus on the boy who continues to hurt you, or are you going to trust in the Lord’s plan for you? Are you going to focus on covering your face with makeup, or are you going to clothe yourself with the fruits of the spirit? Are you going to live for Christ, or die for the world?
Enjoy where the Lord has placed you in the present, but remember that your possessions, looks, and size do not matter in comparison to the love the Lord has for you. Your worth does not come from what the scale says or how many guys text you first. Your worth comes from the cross. The cross that Jesus was nailed to in order for you to be forgiven. That is all that matters. That is all you need.
Go on a run, eat fresh fruit, and make lots of friends. Belly-laugh, dance to good music, and enjoy the world God has placed you in. However, do not find your worth in this world. This world doesn’t matter. The cross does, and how you carry your cross daily is what matters. That is all you need, darling.
“So we don’t look at the troubles we can see now; rather, we fix our gaze on things that cannot be seen. For the things we see now will soon be gone, but the things we cannot see will last forever.” 2 Corinthians 4:18
